SurrealLabor - Julia Ihls, Andreas Hölldorfer, Marius Probst funded by the Fraunhofer Network "Science, Art and Design" The Fraunhofer Institute for Interfacial Engineering and Biotechnology IGB conducts applied research at the interface of biology and engineering to develop sustainable technologies and processes for health, environmental protection, and the bioeconomy. SurrealLabor explores the intersections of art, bio‑design and digital media, using artistic spatial interventions to question and expand visions of future societies.

CHITIN_shelter - Bio-based textiles made from marine residual materials

CHITIN [C8H13NO5]_shelter explores how chitin and chitosan derived from biological marine waste streams can be utilized for textile applications. Instead of linear, petrochemical material logics, it creates an experimental space that brings together material research, textile development, and speculative design to reflect on and investigate: How can biological cycles give rise to new textile materials, body-related applications, and future-oriented design practices?
