MUNICH Beyond ist kein Add-on, sondern eine Setzung: ein gemeinsames Programm von Festival der Zukunft und FILMFEST MÜNCHEN, das XR, immersive Medien und filmische Formate konsequent zusammendenkt. Unterstützt vom FilmFernsehFonds Bayern und in Kooperation mit XR HUB Bavaria und dem Residenztheater München entsteht hier ein Raum, in dem sich künstlerische Praxis, Technologie und Publikum neu zueinander verhalten.

Oder konkreter: Wie erzählen wir, wenn der Bildschirm verschwindet?

Im Zentrum steht eine kuratierte XR-Ausstellung auf über 500 m², die während des gesamten Festivals zugänglich ist. Gezeigt werden internationale Arbeiten, die im letzten Jahr bei Festivals wie dem Venice International Film Festival oder South by Southwest (SXSW) Premiere gefeiert oder Preise gewonnen haben. Dazu kommen Projekte aus Bayern, die nicht als „lokaler Beitrag“ laufen, sondern als ernstzunehmende Player im internationalen Feld.

Das Ganze funktioniert weniger als Showcase im klassischen Sinn, sondern eher als Spielfeld: ausprobieren, durchlaufen, scheitern, nochmal versuchen.

Ergänzt wird die Ausstellung durch ein Programm aus Talks, Workshops, Masterclasses und Labs, das sich gezielt an den Schnittstellen bewegt: XR, immersives Storytelling, Spatial Media und Virtual Production. Inhaltlich geht es dabei nicht nur um Tools, sondern um Strukturen – also um Formate, neue Publika, neue Räume und die Frage, wie daraus tragfähige Modelle entstehen.

Mit den Dome Stories verschiebt sich der Fokus noch einmal: internationale Fulldome-Filme und immersive Kuppelproduktionen, die zeigen, was passiert, wenn filmische Dramaturgie nicht mehr frontal organisiert ist, sondern räumlich gedacht werden muss. Kino, nur ohne vorne.

Ein weiterer Baustein ist die zweite Ausgabe der New Realities Competition, initiiert von XR HUB Bavaria und 1E9. Gesucht werden Projekte, Konzepte und Produkte, die XR-Technologien sinnvoll einsetzen – nicht als Effekt, sondern als Werkzeug.

Die ausgezeichneten Projekte werden am 3. Juli im Rahmen von MUNICH Beyond präsentiert und von einer internationalen Jury prämiert.

Neben dem kuratierten Programm entsteht das, was man nicht planen kann, aber braucht: Begegnungen. Austausch. Community. Ein Setting, in dem sich Kunst, Technologie und Industrie nicht nur nebeneinander zeigen, sondern tatsächlich aufeinander reagieren.

MUNICH Beyond baut auf seiner ersten Edition 2025 auf – und entwickelt sich weiter als Plattform, die München und Bayern sichtbar im internationalen Kontext von XR und immersiven Medien positioniert.

MUNICH Beyond is not an add-on, but a deliberate statement: a joint program by Festival der Zukunft and FILMFEST MÜNCHEN that consistently brings together XR, immersive media, and cinematic formats. Supported by the FilmFernsehFonds Bayern and in cooperation with XR HUB Bavaria and the Munich Residenztheater, it creates a space in which artistic practice, technology, and audiences are newly positioned in relation to one another.

Or more concretely: How do we tell stories when the screen disappears?

At its core is a curated XR exhibition spanning over 500 square metres, open throughout the entire festival. It features international works that premiered or won awards over the past year at festivals such as the Venice International Film Festival or South by Southwest (SXSW). It also includes projects from Bavaria, not presented as a “local contribution,” but as serious players in the international field.

Rather than functioning as a traditional showcase, the exhibition is conceived as a playground: try things out, move through it, fail, try again.

The exhibition is complemented by a program of talks, workshops, masterclasses, and labs that operate at key intersections: XR, immersive storytelling, spatial media, and virtual production. The focus is not only on tools, but on structures – formats, new audiences, new spaces, and the question of how viable models can emerge from them.

With Dome Stories, the focus shifts once again: international fulldome films and immersive dome productions that demonstrate what happens when cinematic dramaturgy is no longer organised frontally, but must be conceived spatially. Cinema –just without a front.

Another key component is the second edition of the New Realities Competition, initiated by XR Hub Bavaria and 1E9. It calls for projects, concepts, and products that meaningfully use XR technologies – not as effect, but as tool.

Submission deadline: May 15, 2026

The awarded projects will be presented on July 3 as part of MUNICH Beyond and recognised by an international jury.

Alongside the curated programme emerges what cannot be planned but is essential: encounters. Exchange. Community. A setting in which art, technology, and industry do not merely coexist, but actively respond to one another.

MUNICH Beyond builds on its first edition in 2025 – and continues to develop as a platform positioning Munich and Bavaria within the international XR and immersive media landscape.
