LinkedIn

Julia Ihls is an interdisciplinary designer and researcher, and Head of the Bio Design Lab at the University of Arts and Design Karlsruhe. Her work engages with the intersections of biodesign, posthumanist discourses, and spatial staging. Drawing on artistic, academic, and curatorial practices, she investigates convivial forms of living and designing with new (bio)materials and explores collaborative modes of knowledge production. She is a co-founder of SurrealLabor—an art and research collective working at the interfaces of art, biodesign, and digital media. In her ongoing PhD project “Labmospheres” at the Technical University of Munich, she examines transdisciplinary laboratory structures through international case studies and practical prototypes.
