Prof. Dr. rer. nat. habil. Rudolph Triebel is a Professor of Intelligent Robot Perception at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and Head of the Department of Perception and Cognition at the German Aerospace Center (DLR). After studying Computer Science at the University of Freiburg, he earned his PhD there in 2007 with a dissertation on three-dimensional perception for mobile robots, Title: “Approaches for Efficient and Autonomous Learning in Robotics and Computer Vision”. He then held research positions at ETH Zurich, the University of Oxford, and the Technical University of Munich, where he completed his habilitation in 2015 on autonomous learning in robotics and computer vision. His research focuses on sensor-based environment perception, visual navigation, and machine learning for autonomous systems.

Do Robots Know What They See – or See What They Know?

Our visual sense enables us to perform a large range of complex tasks by interacting with objects and the environment. Similary, robots need strong visual capabilities to detect, reconstruct, and interact with objects, and classical machine learning methods use annotated training…
